Electoral reform coalition Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah would be flagging off the Bersih 5 convoy from Kota Baru on Oct 1.

The seven-week convoy would also be simultaneously flagged off from five other locations in five states in the Peninsular, across 246 cities, towns and villages.

Convoy coordinator for the East Coast, Safwan Anang, said he was called for a meeting with the Kota Baru district police chief.

"We (organisers) were called to meet the (Kota Baru) OCPD yesterday.

"He said he has no problems with the convoy but only requested for a minor adjustment to the route," Safwan told a press conference at the Bersih headquarters in Petaling Jaya today.

Slated to flag off from Padang Bank, Kota Baru, he said the adjustment was requested to avoid participants from cycling on busy main roads.

"So this shows police are also starting to support us," said Safwan.

Similarly, Bersih member Jay Jay Denis also said the police have cooperated in organising the West Coast stretch of the convoy, starting from Lumut in Perak.

"We would like to thank the police for their cooperation," said Denis.

Activist Hishamuddin Rais is also expected to be part of the convoy in Lumut.

Human Rights Society chairperson Ambiga Sreenevasan, meanwhile, would be in Johor Baru, Johor, and national laureate A Samad Said in Kangar, Perlis.

Maria earlier reassured that organisers have complied with the 10-day notice required under the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012.

While the convoy will be on the move every weekend, various activities will be held at the areas they would pass along the way.

The goal, according to Bersih, was to strike up a national conversation on issues linked to state-investor 1MDB and calls for removal of Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

In the style of the Olympics, a symbolic torch would be brought along by the convoy, before they assembled on Nov 19 for the final Bersih 5 rally in Kuala Lumpur.
