RMAF helicopter in emergency landing at school in Sabah

A Nuri helicopter owned by the Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) which was carrying 14 personnel landed on the roof of a living skills centre during an emergency landing at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Balung in Tawau, Sabah today.

No fatalities have been reported and the 14 injured personnel are being treated at Tawau Hospital.

Tawau Fire and Rescue senior assistant superintendent Sahidi Mahali said five students were also injured in the 9.45am incident.

He said the department was gathering further information on the case.

Bernama learnt that the helicopter had earlier tried to land on the field of the school.

One of the helicopter's rotor blades was flung about 200 metres away from the scene.

Meanwhile, the RMAF in a statement said the helicopter which was carrying 14 personnel left its base here at 7.35am for routine flight training.

"The crew and passengers are all safe," it said.

According to the statement, RMAF has sent a rescue team to the location and cordoned off the area before taking steps to bring out the helicopter.

"RMAF will form an investigation team on the cause of the incident," it said.

Tawau district police chief ACP Fadil Marsus told reporters when met that SMK Balung has been closed for the day to enable supervision works.

He said the police, Fire and Rescue Department and other agencies such as the Civil Defence Forces and Tawau Hospital have opened operations control centres at the school to facilitate supervision works.

He said the state Education Department was also involved in the supervision works.

"We also received reports that some students have been traumatised by the incident as it had happened during lessons in class," he said.

The incident damaged a three-storey building, the living skills centre and a hall under construction at SMK Balung, located about 40km from the town centre.

One of the teachers who declined to be named, recalled a thunderous crashing sound near the staff room while conducting lessons.
