Political cartoonist Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque has accepted the suggestion of inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar to draw Donald Duck, instead of insulting the country's political leaders.

Better known as Zunar, the cartoonist today published a caricature depicting Donald Duck and Mickey Mouse on his Facebook page.

"I was sitting at my table, scratching my head for ideas. Someone suggested I draw Donald Duck. I grabbed my pen and started drawing," he said, thanking Khalid for the "brilliant idea".

However, Zunar said, he added a local twist, where Donald Duck is called 'Donald Dedak', and hoped the police chief would not arrest him for this.

The term 'dedak' means "animal feed". It has frequently been used by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad to describe those who allegedly receive rewards in return for their allegiance to Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Zunar said based on comments he received on his Facebook page, his fans loved the cartoon, and it received 500 shares in just two hours after it was published this morning.

Last Friday, Khalid, when asked if Zunar would be allowed to hold a public exhibition again, suggested that the cartoonist instead channels his creative juices into producing "nice drawings" .

The police chief warned that Zunar would face legal consequences if he exhibited cartoons that insulted the country's leaders.

Khalid also explained that humour was subjective.

On Nov 26, Zunar was arrested under the Sedition Act and Section 504 of the Penal Code for attempting to breach the peace.

Police had seized Zunar’s cartoons, and advised him to cancel his programmes, including a book launch, which was to be held in Penang for two weeks.

He was detained after his exhibition, which was launched by Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng, in Komtar was disrupted by a group led by Penang Umno Youth chief Rafizal Abdul Rahim.

Rafizal had accused Zunar of "insulting and lying about" Najib. Two of Zunar’s pieces were damaged during the incident.

Khalid said those who tried to assault Zunar and disrupted his exhibition are also being investigated.
