PM: Dr M now doing 'U-turn' on BR1M

Dr Mahathir Mohamad's openness to continuing the BR1M cash handouts should Pakatan Harapan and Parti Pribumi Bersatu form the next federal government showed that he was inconsistent, said Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

Najib told reporters in Pekan that Mahathir's inconsistent stand on BR1M showed that he was a "jaguh U-turn" (U-turn champion).

He said just three weeks ago, Mahathir had claimed that BR1M was a form of corruption.

"This means that he is making too many U-turns... We can consider him as a 'jaguh U-turn'. He has made one contradictory statement after another," said Najib, according to Utusan Online.

Yesterday, Mahathir said he was open to the idea of maintaining BR1M on condition that it was necessary and that it was not promised to voters during election time.

"BR1M cannot be included in the election manifesto of any political parties," he said during his address at Bersatu's launch in Shah Alam last night.
