The Selangor state executive council has suspended the enforcement of the controversial non-Muslim places of worship guidelines pending a review.

"Only the portion (of The Selangor Manual Guidelines and Selangor State Planning Standard) will be suspended and reviewed... It will be suspended until the review is completed.

“I will make an announcement about this later," senior state executive councillor Teng Chang Khim told reporters after the exco meeting in Shah Alam today.

He said the revision will be done by the Selangor Town and Country Planning Department.

Teng had earlier apologised and offered to resign for the error and said the guidelines were mistakenly included, even though he had instructed that these be removed.

Among others, the guidelines state that non-Muslim places of worship should not be built within 50 metres of Muslim homes and that the height should be appropriate.

Teng said there was no reason to be concerned about the guidelines as it has been suspended.

"It has been suspended, what concerns are there? If it has been suspended, what is there to fear? When we have a decision we will announce it," he said.

He also stressed that the Selangor state government always upheld religious harmony and tolerance.

"We respect all religions practiced by Selangor residents.

"Therefore, all policies regarding Islam and non-Muslims are all respected. We rely on this principle to formulate policies, laws, and guidelines that are fair," he said.
