The Bar Council and Malaysiakini invites all Malaysians to mark World Press Freedom Day by attending the "Can media and law co-exist?" forum in Kuala Lumpur next Saturday, May 6.

This full-day event, a collaboration between the Bar Council's Continuing Professional Development Department and Malaysiakini, will focus on how Malaysian law regulates our constitutional right to freedom of expression.

The speakers consist of representatives from both the legal fraternity and media industry who will examine and analyse how the exercise of the freedom of expression can be challenged.

There will also be a discussion on how to safeguard this right in times of heightened political, religious, and racial tensions. It will also touch on the issue of fake news.

Speakers include lawyers K Shanmuga, Choo Dee Wei and T Sudharsanan, political cartoonist Zunar, writer Sheena Gurbakash, veteran investigative journalist R Nadeswaran and Malaysiakini editor-in-chief Steven Gan.

The event will take place at the Bar Council's headquarters in Kuala Lumpur and registration cost is RM53 (inclusive of GST).

Note to lawyers, this programme is claimable under the CPD scheme and carries 5 CPD points.
