Pokok Sena MP Mahfuz Omar today announced his decision to quit PAS.

“I will send a letter to the PAS secretary-general in accordance with the party constitution to stop my PAS membership, effective 11.59pm on Dec 31, 2017, after my 34-year membership in the party,” he told a press conference in Alor Setar while holding up a replica of his PAS membership card.

The press conference was broadcast live on Kedah Amanah's Facebook.

However, the PAS renegade said he has not decided which party he would join.

“I need some time to think of my political future,” he said, in reply to a question on his next destination.

Elaborating, Mahfuz said if a man passes away, the wife mourns for four months and ten days, and likewise, he needs some time.

“What I am doing is for the sake of the country and PAS members, we must create change,” he said.

“Other parties are always giving me the chance to join them, such as PKR, Amanah, Bersatu, DAP, and I thank them for the offers.

“Let me have some time to make the best decision possible for the sake of the people and country,” he added.

He added the next general election was close, and he needed more time to consider his options.

Defending his Pokok Sena seat was not his priority, said Mahfuz, as he never joined PAS to be an elected representative.

“I did it for the sake of the community and for the country. I am more troubled if the people are not doing well,” he said.

The vocal MP was one of the few PAS leaders who was openly supportive of Pakatan Harapan.

In October, Kedah PAS dropped Mahfuz from their coming 14th general election line up.
