Kajang police expect to complete their investigation in two days into a case of “attempted murder and rioting” during a fracas at Bandar Mahkota Cheras (BMC) on May 27.

mahkota cheras 4 assaulted individuals extend bail 020608 youths Three of the four suspects - Cheok Kem Hoo, 21, Chan Siew Meng, 31, and Chang Jiun Mein, 21, were called to the police station this morning to have their statements recorded. Their bail was extended up to June 10.

Jiun Mein’s 23-year-old brother Jiun Haur (extreme right in photo) , is on bail up to June 11. The mechanic sustained severe injuries when assaulted by some 20 police personnel that night, and was excused from being questioned.

The four are being probed for allegedly attempting to cause injury to several police personnel near the barricaded toll-free access road in BMC.

Earlier that day, BMC residents had gathered in numbers to tear down the barrier put up by toll concessionaire Grand Saga Sdn Bhd, to block off a toll-free access road. The police were on standby to disperse the residents.

mahkota cheras grand saga road barricade fru assault 280508 04 The four suspects were trying to leave the scene in their Proton Wira - driven by Jiun Haur - and were said to have attempted to run over several members of the riot squad who were guarding the barricade.

The two police officers and a FRU personnel allegedly affected have yet to come forward to give their statements to police.

Jiun Haur was at the police station with his father today, to accompany Jiun Mein. He had several stitches on his upper lip and nose, but appeared calm.

“I have headaches and (there are noises in my ear). I will have a check up at the Kajang hospital,” he said.

Asked if he would seek compensation to cover his medical expenses, he said he has not decided to do so.

On May 29, he had lodged a report at the Seremban police station stating his innocence in the matter.

‘Impartial investigation’

Kajang police chief ACP Shakaruddin Che Mood told a press conference this morning that the police have a right to protect themselves.

MCA Youth legal bureau chief Gan Ping Sieu said he would write to the inspector-general of police and the home ministry soon, seeking an inquiry into the police brutality.

Gan, who is representing the four suspects, said Shakaruddin had assured an “impartial investigation” into the incident.

“He said he would assign two separate investigating officers, which is good news,” said Gan.

He also called on eyewitnesses to provide information, and added that he would work with the human rights commission which is to consider a public inquiry into the incident.

Gan also said that the youth wing hoped that the attorney general will not prosecute the four.

He added that the police had indeed used excessive force on the four and those responsible should be dragged to court to face action.

"The four were unarmed and defenceless. There was no reason for the police to use excessive force," he said.
