Doomed to repeat the same mistake twice is PAS
I refer to the Malaysiakini report Nik Aziz holds private meet to reject unity gov't .
The last time PAS joined BN in their coalition government, PAS left in acrimonious circumstances.
Till today the bitterness and anger that had evolved during that period has left its spiritual guru, Nik Aziz Nik Mat adamant that never again should PAS join hands to form the federal government with Umno.
To him, putting the same hand twice in the hole to be bitten by the snake will be unforgivable.
PAS is doomed to suffer the same fate it suffered in Terengganu in 1999 when it lost Terengganu to the BN. The PAS President Abdul Hadi Awang should be held accountable for the loss as much as Nik Aziz should be credited with the Kelantan's PAS victory.
It was Abdul Hadi's arrogance that was the cause of PAS' downfall.
Even in the March 2008 election when BN was at its weakest, PAS under Hadi could not even wrest Terengganu from the corrupt and divided Umno while Pakatan Raykat managed to wrest four states from BN.
PAS' victory in many of the seats it contested was because for the first time in its electoral campaigns, non-Malays votes were crucial for its success. And non-Malay votes were generously given to PAS because they were totally against the corrupt Umno and BN government machinery.
The anger against BN translated into votes for PAS and the other opposition candidates. That in essence explains the phenomenal success of the PAS, PKR and DAP electoral campaigns that finally deprived the BN government of its two-thirds majority in Parliament and also saw it losing five states to the Pakatan Rakyat coalition.
Now its president, Hadi, and his deputy, Nasharuddin Mat Isa. seems to have short-term memories of the party's previous dally with Umno and are considering a ‘unity government' where presumably the PAS president would be rewarded with a minor ministerial position.
But PAS under Hadi would be foolish to think that with a unity with BN, their current popularity will be sustained until the next 13th general election.
It is most likely that any unity government with BN would spell disaster and contribute to the demise of its popularity amongst the non-Malays.
But like the popular saying, those people who fail to learn from history are condemned or doomed to repeat the same mistake.
And in this case, PAS under Hadi is doomed to repeat the same mistake again.
