I read with great interest KJ John’s write-up in Malaysiakini , ‘MACC goofs up in court’ .

Our civil service is staffed by officers who are products of the NEP. Passing marks were lowered to allow them to pass and after passing them, they were absorbed in the civil service. Third-rate minds in the premier service!

Forty years ago, Lee Kuan Yew said that he was not going to allow the Attorney-General's Chambers to be staffed by incompetent lawyers. The good ones come and get a few years of experience. After that, they go out on their own or join some big firm.

In the end, the mediocre lawyers are fighting cases against the better lawyers who are outside.  In a few years, Lee changed it and it is presently staffed by the cream of the crop in the profession. We are still to learn and practice this.

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has some special functions which are not spelt in its charter. It is harassing those who are against the government or the present system.

It is also to clear crooks after an investigation so that guys like former Selangor menteri besar Dr Mohd Khir Toyo can go around and say that he has been investigated and cleared. The reason they cleared him - he was bribed without being asked.

That is not the law but that is how they interpreted it. What are the MACC commissioners doing about it? Damn nothing.
