Karpal's motion wasting precious Parliament time
I refer to your news report entitled ‘ Karpal submits motion to censure KJ for tweet ’, and strongly feel that Karpal has overplayed and overdone the issue of Rembau MP Khairy Jamaluddin’s ‘Kg Buah Pala vs Kg Buah Dada’.
From my readings of parliamentary standing orders, the speaker would not allow proceedings to be temporarily adjourned, to discuss the war of words between two MPs across the political divide, otherwise there will be little time left for real business.
I do not like the way Khairy conducts his politics but many would share my view that he is making a small joke in the tweet. There is nothing so serious or so defamatory about that remark, but because it involves Kg Buah Pala, Karpal Singh has purposely overdone it, in order to portray himself as hero among his own community.
If Karpal is not satisfied with Khairy remarks, he could lodge a police report, or pursue legal action in court, after all he is a talented lawyer. Having said that, I must also maintain that such remarks by an MP outside the House constitutes no misbehaviour.
Karpal has definitely abused Standing Orders 18(1) to gain cheap publicity. Karpal thinks that the Dewan Rakyat operates like court of laws where legal counsel frequently side-track from main proceedings to file-in emergency application and the judge would agree to it most of the time.
It is not difficult to write a petition under standing order 18(1) but the crucial question is; should this be done to gain publicity and also at the expense precious parliamentary resources ?
