It's shocking that Bekok Dam in Johore is still under threat from chemicals used by farmers.

The Auditor-General's Report in 2008 on the encroachment by farmers must be gathering dust on the shelf.

I am damned if I do not air this point. Four years have gone by; and the state government has not bothered to gazette the Bekok Dam area.

The water here caters to 500,000 people; and just imagine the horror stories that may emerge some years down the road when people fall sick of mysterious illnesses; and finally trace the source to contaminated water from the Bekok Dam.

With the report in The Star (13th March, 2012), what is the menteri Besar waiting for? Is he going to make a study of the report, take weeks or months or years before he acts?

Or is he going to act now; gazette the area, and make it out of bounds to farmers. Forget the WHO and Health Ministry guidelines; get the job done now.

Let not the 500,000 people suffer later and blame the government for negligence.

Get the job done now, not tomorrow. Call for an Emergency State Assembly meeting and pass the bill. Get the area gazetted now.

The people's health is at stake. Don't play with their lives, please.
