I refer to Maria Idris's letter PAS resorting to character assassination which defended the likes of Dr Farish A Noor and other more progressive Muslims. I believe these people can show that Malaysia can be an enlightened leader in the Islamic world.

Malaysia has made much investment in education in the way of both traditional and modern scholarships for young Muslims. Hence it should not be surprising that some young Malay Malaysians are now appearing and setting ground-breaking work. Malaysia should be proud of these people who show promise of becoming respected intellectuals in the Muslim world.

Why should Malaysia not take the lead in progressiveness in the Muslim world and stop being just a follower of Saudi Arabia or Iran? Malaysia is one of the most successful Muslim countries in the world. It has invested heavily in education, technology and globalisation of young Muslims for more than four decades.

Its high time Malaysia has the courage and confidence to say that it knows where it stands in the Muslim world. Malaysian Muslims can show the way for the others. Like Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad says, the Malays are not inferior and it is time to prove him right.

I believe writers like Farish and Maria reflect both the views and souls of the majority of Malaysian Muslims
