I shudder to think what is in the mind of our policymakers. Our elected representatives once again proved their incompetency in understanding the spirit of the law, and why nobody shouldn’t be above the law. To begin with, the law is meant for good of everyone, and the policymaker should know that; or else, he is not qualified to be a policymaker.

Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan’s statement that the speeding law is not applicable to government officers on duty is a case in point. First and foremost, the speeding law is practised all over the world as it is an effective intervention to reduce risk of getting involved in road accidents.

Why is speeding dangerous? Numerous literature on traffic safety study show association between speeding and impact from the crash. In layman’s language, the higher the speed, the more dangerous it is when you hit on object (such as oncoming vehicle, a static object, or a person or animal) as explained in the law of physic.

The higher the speed, the greater the impact - and the speed you are driving would normally determine the outcome - whether you walk out of the car safely, go out to clinic as an outpatient, bedridden for the rest of your life, or laid to rest 2m underground for good. The choice is yours.

Regardless whether you’re a minister or nasi lemak seller, when you speed, you would probably not be able to stop on time. If you had no idea, take a minute of your time to watch this Australian traffic safety campaign video to encourage people to cut down even 5kph, because that 5kph makes a difference. If you don’t understand this message, check your brain whether it’s still there.

The last time I see, the ministers and government officials are just like you and I, made of human flesh and bones. Therefore, even at 45kph, if you hit a static object (such as a tree or stalled lorry), you would suffer the fate of crash test dummies. Watch this Asean NCAP crash test on an old Proton Saga and imagine you, your wife, and your child were those dummies in the car. Would you survive?

Well, I purposely choose an old car without airbags because most people still can’t afford safe cars - unlike the ego-centric ministers. What more if you don’t put on the seatbelt, drive a car without airbags, or an old car.

Your speed would also determine whether the pedestrian that you hit will survive or die. Take a look at this video , deputy minister Nur Jazlan. You need traffic safety education badly.

Here is another material that probably would help you understand the relationship between speeding and stopping distance. Please read and digest it and don’t embarrass your high school Math teacher, please.

Last but not least, and worst of all, your statement reflects your attitude that it is okay for the powers-that-be to commit offence, while people who elected you could not. Let me tell you again, the traffic safety law, just like any other laws, do not come with privileges for any party. It has to do with the life and death - either you kill yourself or you kill others. Or both.

Kill the speed before the speed kills you. The ministers and government officials are no exception because your body is not made of steel.

Oh My God (OMG), Nur Jazlan! I thought you’re one of the better ministers and deputy ministers. Please don’t follow in the footstep of Ahmad Maslan and Hasan Malek.
