It is hard to believe we are already mid-way through 2016. It seemed like yesterday we were welcoming the new year with fireworks, parties and singing Auld Lang Syne through the night.

A new year is a good time to start anew. To close the books on what has been and look forward to new beginnings. A time to move ahead with a firm resolve not to repeat past mistakes. An optimistic outlook to being a better boss, parent, friend and also to lead the country to greater heights.

At this juncture, half way through the year, it is timely to take stock and reevaluate if we are on the right track or not. Distractions could have led us astray and we need to get on track again. A time to examine our conscience and ourselves and do the right thing. It is not too late. We have a full six months to turn situations around.

Before we press the reset button let us reflect and ponder on our lives with honesty for new goals to be set.

Within the family, have we contributed towards the wholesomeness of the unit? Have we upheld family values or brought shame to the family in pursuing our own selfish needs? Have we put family first or other priorities have taken precedence? Have we spent enough time with family members?

Personally, have we nourished and treasured the one and only body we have with respect by treating it well? Are we guilty of subjecting our bodies to the vices of life for temporary pleasures? Do we eat well and exercise sufficiently to build rather than abuse our bodies?

Have we grown spiritually to understand our religious beliefs better or are we still at primary school levels in our faith? Have we contributed to the spiritual growth of our children and taught them our faiths or abdicated our role and left this to religious teachers? When did we last pray?

Have we been a good example and role model to others in society? Do we influence others positively or negatively? Have we displayed mercy and compassion towards others? Spiritual and corporeal? Would others emulate our actions?

If in public office, have we been self serving or genuinely worked for the good of the whole? Have we upheld high principles of trust and integrity at all times? Have we abused the trust given us?

We are human. We make mistakes. We fall. The problem is when we choose to remain in the mud and find comfort in the filth. We owe it to ourselves and others to pull ourselves out, make retribution and move on. Only then can we hold our heads up high and walk with dignity.

We have six months to transform into a better person. The clock is ticking. It is never too late. The choice is yours.
