Words cannot describe my anger upon reading the way Terence Gomez, a brilliant scholar and a really rare breed in this part of the world, is forced to resign.

I really do not understand the reasons for him not being allowed to go on secondment to the United Nations, an appointment which would bring much glory to Malaysia not unlike Prof KS Jomo's.

In fact the prime minister, who is trying to foster a 'world class infrastructure with first world mentality', should be happy that those two abovementioned brilliant talents are recognised internationally. How many of our academicians have such an honour?

If we can award a 'datukship' for swimming across the English channel, then a 'Tan Sri' should be given to these two professors for bringing top honour to the nation.

Instead, they are forced to resign. It is really sad. We never appreciate top talents at home. No wonder more and more are leaving our shores for countries where their talents are better appreciated.
