I refer to DPBM's very excellent letter in support of some system that sets different price tiers for fuel in Malaysia in order to make the system fairer and more equitable particularly for the poorer sections of society where the cost of fuel represents a significant drain on their low incomes.

However, I feel that the system DPBM proposed might be very difficult, complicated and time consuming to implement and I think that some other systems might be more beneficial.

The major fuel guzzlers in Malaysia are those people that own ridiculously large and 'status' cars such as Mercedes-Benzes, Volvos, BMWs, Camrys etc, and it is these people who should be penalised for wasting valuable fossil fuel to say nothing of the additional air pollution and traffic congestion that they cause by having such vehicles.

Indeed it would be such a nice display of 'leadership by example' if all ministers and high-level public servants were given a new breed economical cars instead of these monstrous and intimidating vehicles that they reward themselves with.

It is sad that such people cannot gain any respect by their policies, hard work and dedication to their jobs of representing the rakyat but must gain it from always being seen in some foreign-made and usually black coloured 'tank'!

As far as helping the greater rakyat of Malaysia, I feel the best move would be to both increase the import duty on the largely foreign fuel guzzlers such as Mercedes Benzes and also greatly increase the annual licence fees for such vehicles.

This would have the benefit of reducing overall fuel usage in Malaysia, reducing environmental pollution, reducing traffic congestion and increasing government revenue from such vehicles which could then be channeled into maintaining the fuel price for the people who are sensible enough to own smaller and more efficient vehicles.
