LETTER | The feting of the legendary 1967 victorious Thomas Cup shuttlers and some sporting personalities at Istana Negara in a reception by the king and queen last week is a landmark occasion for their great service and contribution to the country.

It is heart-warming to know that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, being a sportsperson himself, hosted the reception in recognition of the glory that they brought to the nation.

Only those who are now in their 60s and above who grew up in that era will know by heart about these heroes. It was only the fourth time that Malaysia had won the Thomas Cup and tasted success a fifth time only in 1992.

For these stalwarts, Yew Cheng Hoe, Billy Ng Seow Meng, Tan Yee Khan, Teh Kew San and Tan Aik Huang, it must have been a truly memorable occasion, and one to remember for the rest of their lives. What finally matters most is recognition.

Since 1967, 55 years have passed by, and Malaysia has managed to gain the coveted trophy just once in 1992. The present generation will not truly appreciate the exploits of these players who fought tooth and nail against their opponents to achieve victory.

In life for that matter, only when we live, breathe and witness the moment, will we appreciate, remember and cherish it for a lifetime. Too bad Ng Boon Bee is not with them to partake in this memorable event to showcase gratitude.
