I refer to the letter Putrajaya Mahathir's Fatehpur Sikri .

What is Putrajaya being used for now? The palace of the PM? The PM's office? But the Parliament is still in KL and so is everything else.

During the construction of Putrajaya in mid 1990's, a lot of resources were sucked up, resulting in higher inflation and shortages, construction materials included. Remember the shortage of water back in 1997 and 1998?

That was to fill up the Putrajaya Lake. Imagine, some people had to go without water so that the lake could be filled. Not only that, the construction works for Putrajaya sucked up a lot of money so much so the nation's coffers were drained, leaving us vulnerable to the subsequent event - the financial crisis of '97, and the recession thereafter.

In hindsight, we didn't have to go through that difficult time. If only we were more prudent in our spending by not spending big on 'white elephant' projects.

Centralisation of administration is a thing of the past. In the West, the governments are trying hard to be close to their people. Government departments are de-centralised, main offices no longer located in administrative capitals but in provincial towns where rent and housing is cheaper and quality of living for government workers are much better than in big cities.

Communication between de-centralised offices is not a major problem with the Internet and a good courier service.

Indeed, Putrajaya could be a 'white elephant'. So what are we going to do about it? Shall we let it be reclaimed by the forest and the wildlife bit by bit? I reckon Putrajaya must earn its own existence; it must be more than just the city of the PM's residence.

I have never been to Putrajaya. But I remember talking to a villager some years back who enthused about the beautiful buildings, nice architecture and the mosque that look like the Masjid Nabi in Madinah. Worth visiting, he said.

Well, all I am saying is that Putrajaya must earn its existence even as a tourist destination. Indeed we can make it a tourist destination if we built more infrastructure like a good transportation system, tourist facilities etc.
