I read with exasperation the reasons given by our deputy minister in the Prime Minister's Department and a member of parliament for the construction of the world's largest (not again!) convention centre in Putrajaya reportedly costing 'only' RM500 million ([#1] Gov't rapped over mega-project in Putrajaya [/#], April 18). Three cheers to the leaders of the Bolehland!

Can you believe it? The construction of the convention centre, according to deputy minister Tengku Azlan Sultan Abu Bakar, is to enhance the country's image as many leaders from the world Islamic nations will be present at the OIC (Organisation of Islamic Countries) Summit in 2003.

What's more, Barisan Nasional MP for Sri Gading Haji Mohamad Haji Aziz said, "Islamic leaders in other countries will look up to us". Well, he certainly seems to be out there to please his boss.

Do we need another white elephant (there are already many!) while many people in the country live in poor conditions and many other face an uncertain future because they may be out of jobs?

Having another white elephant will not make us proud. On the contrary, we'd be angry because of the lack of accountability and the way public funds are used. Angry because we voted in a bunch of idiots to be our leaders.

May God bless Malaysia and its people.
