Education Minister Musa Mohamad has received the report by an independent committee on alleged racial segregation in schools.

The report is with the minister, the Education Ministry director-general Ambrin Buang confirmed this today, adding that further questions on the matter should be addressed to Musa.

Asked whether the minister has briefed the cabinet about the report, Ambrin said he did not know.

It was reported Monday that Musa was expecting the report to be submitted to him yesterday or today.

The minister added that he will reveal the report to the public after briefing the cabinet which meets weekly on Wednesday.

Segregation in 197 schools

On Jan 2, the seven-member independent committee started its probe into the National Union of the Teaching Professions allegation that segregation is practised in 197 primary and secondary schools nationwide.

The committee headed by former Universiti Sains Malaysias deputy vice-chancellor and political scientist Emeritus Prof KJ Ratnam, was given eight weeks to complete its investigation.

Amrin had earlier attended the launch of the E-Learning For Life project co-organised by the ministry and the United Nations Development Programme in Kuala Lumpur.

The RM1.3 million project to set up information technology hubs in selected schools in Peninsular Malaysia, with the aim of bridging the digital divide between rural and urban areas, is sponsored by multinational soft drink manufacturer Coca-Cola.
