As the Umno Annual General Assembly (AGM) entered its final lap today, a delegate from Johor chose to lash out against opposition party DAP for adobting the ‘Malaysian Malaysia' concept.

Delegate Samsol Bari Jamali said the concept popularized by the Chinese-majority party, is the "poison that could result in cruelty towards the bumiputera".

umno agm egm 151009 najib give speech 04 "But the concept of 1Malaysia (tagline popularized by Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak) is the cure to that poison," he said when debating presidential address.

‘Malaysian Malaysia' has long been used by the DAP which carries the meaning of prioritizing nationality instead of ethnicity.

The concept of 1Malaysia, said Samsol, is based on the Federal Constitution and social justice which Umno needs to look after the interest of all ethnic groups as it provides the real path to national unity.

On the same note, he rejected the assumption that 1Malaysia is similar to Malaysian Malaysia concept because the DAP's concept "seeks equality which will result in no social justice in the Malaysian context".

"In reality, the proponents of Malaysian Malaysia have always made misleading interpretations of the Federal Constitution.

"This definition is further sensationalised and manipulated which in the end results in prejudice and unfairness to the people," he said.

Samsol also claimed that Malaysian Malaysia does not bring social justice to all Malaysian races.

"Instead, it can cause cruelty when rights in the Federal Constitution are violated and denied. Thus, 1Malaysia is the cure to the Malaysian Malaysia poison," he said.

Meanwhile, a delegate from the Federal Territory Yahaya Mat Ghani, said that the 1Malaysia concept would not gamble away the status quo of the Malay rulers' position, Malays and Islam as the official religion.

"We won't compromise even by an inch in order to fulfill the aspirations of certain groups," said Yahaya.

The fox and rabbit

Meanwhile, Penang delegate Shabudin Yahaya likened Umno to a rabbit that is chased by a hungry fox when it comes to facing changes and transformation in the party.

He said Umno should be like a rabbit, which is running away for its life from being eaten by a hungry fox.

umno agm egm 151009 delegates "This is a story about a group of pupils whose attention in class was taken away when they caught the hungry fox trying to catch a rabbit but it failed.

"So the pupils asked the teacher why the fox could not catch the rabbit. The teacher replied: "The fox is running for food but the rabbit is running for its life," said Shabudin to the amazement of those present.

Umno, he said, should emulate the rabbit, who works very hard in its struggle to live.

"The rabbit escaped the fox because it cared about its life and its family. That is why it has a strong reason to keep going and change themselves.

"That is also why we need a strong reason to change in order to uphold our dignity in the party.

"Otherwise, we will become like the fox who gave up in its struggle as it has many other options to chase after," he said, adding that many people do not care if Umno loses in elections.

"They will say, ‘If Umno loses, I still can feed myself. If I can't live in Umno, I can live in other parties. What kind of struggle is that?" asked Shabudin.
