A second wave of floods has hit Terengganu with water rising in most of the main rivers and a few having exceeded the warning level this morning.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department has issued an orange stage warning today in all districts in Terengganu and Kelantan with moderate monsoon rain expected to persist until next week.

More than 81 victims from 14 families have been evacuated un the Hulu Terengganu district yesterday - 61 of the evacuees are from Kampung Ceting and the others are from Kampung Peris.

flood in pahang_05012009_afppix A spokesman at the Hulu Terengganu police operations room said five roads had been closed due to the floods since yesterday.

A Drainage and Irrigation Department said the water at Sungai Telemong in Kampung Ping, Hulu Terengganu, had risen to 19.7m and exceeded its danger level of 19.5m.

The water level at Sungai Marang in Pengkalan Berangan and Sungai Besut in Kampung La has almost the warning mark at 13.05m and 18.16m respectively at 8am today. The danger level of the two rivers is 13.2m and 18.2m respectively.

Kelantan hit too

Meanwhile, a second wave of flood has also hit Kelantan when Sungai Kelantan burst its bank and forced 224 people from Kuala Krai to flee their homes this afternoon.

State flood operation centre spokesman said those from Kuala Krai took refuge at Sekolah Kebangsaan Telekong, Kuala Krai at 4pm.

"They are from Kampung Telekong near the river bank. Fourteen people from three families in Rantau Panjang were also rescued when flash floods inundated their homes following heavy downpour," he told Bernama.

Intermittent rain, occasionally heavy in Kelantan is expected to persist until next weak.

The water level reading at Sungai Golok in Jenob, Tanah Merah at 23.72 metres exceeded the danger level by 0.22 metres while another reading at Rantau Panjang almost reached the danger level at nine metres.

Floods hit Kelantan early this month, causing about 3,000 people in Rantau Panjang and Tumpat to be evacuated. Two people died in the floods.

In Pahang, the number of flood evacuees remain at 24 people comprising three families from Kampung Sungai Ular who were evacuated yesterday afternoon.
