In 2008, Taiwan's Kuomintang presidential candidate Ma Ying-jeou won a landslide victory, which was backed by a highly acclaimed video-based campaign.

In Malaysia, certain party leaders in MCA - coincidently an offshoot of Kuomintang, complete with similar logo - must be hoping that Ma's magic will rub off on them.

They have created a video that features leaders from vice-president Liow Tiong Lai's (left) camp, calling on delegates to attend the Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) on Saturday.

Using a style of music and cinematography similar to that of the Taiwanese video, Liow's allies take turns to speak on the importance of the EGM .

Among them are Youth chief Wee Ka Siong, Wanita head Chew Mei Fun, and central committee members Wong Nai Chee and Wee Jeck Seng.

M'kini footage used

Wee and Chew (below right) are also shown crying at a press conference, after learning that they had been dropped from the presidential council line-up.

NONE It is believed that this part of the footage was taken from a Malaysiakini video of the event.

Part of it was blackened, however, blocking most of the Malaysiakini logo at the top right-hand corner. No consent was given for use of the footage.

At the time of writing, the three-minute video had been viewed 1,700 times since it was uploaded on Nov 20 by MCAMIRT - the acronym for the MCA Integrity Restoration Task Force led by Liow.

The video has attracted more than 100 comments, many of which are scornful of MCA and Liow's team.

Interestingly, one commentator was named 'OngTK2009', a possible reference to party president Ong Tee Keat, who is opposed to the EGM.

The commentator claimed ‘This video copy exactly [ sic ] Ma Ying-jeao's campaign video'.
