Malaysia's 112-year-old colonial landmark the Carcosa Seri Negara has been handed a stay of execution, the hotel's manager said today.

The Carcosa closed its doors at the end of last year after the government opened bids to redevelop the boutique hotel, once home to Britain's colonial rulers.

Filtzinger-Win Lwin, who managed the hotel before it closed, said she decided to stay on after the government handed out a six-month lease to a firm to manage the property.

The property and land management division in the prime minister's office, which owns the hotel, told the New Straits Times newspaper it had decided to cancel the tender process which closed in November.

Completed in 1898, the hotel has played host to a number of historical events such as the signing into being of the new nation of Malaysia in 1957.
