Kelantan Syariah Court Chief Judge Daud Mohamad today called for a study to be carried out following the Kuala Lumpur High Court's decision to allow a non-Muslim to seek a judicial review to enable her to become a syarie lawyer.

A study should be carried out to get an explanation based on the country's laws and constitution, he told Bernama in Kota Bharu today.

This was because Kelantan's Administration of Syariah Court Enactment 1982, and that of the other states did not allow a non-Muslim lawyer to handle cases involving syariah laws.

"Hence, the issue of a non-Muslim lawyer being allowed to handle cases in the syariah court is indeed extraordinary," he said.

Daud was commenting on the Kuala Lumpur High Court's decision on Friday to allow a non-Muslim woman lawyer to seek a judicial review to practice as a syariah lawyer in Kuala Lumpur.

Justice Mohd Zawawi Salleh granted Victoria Jayaseele Martin's application for leave to seek a judicial review for a mandamus order to compel the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) to accept her as a syariah lawyer.
