Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said today the time had come for the Education Ministry to establish a more comprehensive evaluation framework to gauge the effectiveness of the implementation of the education agenda, including sports activities.

muhyiddin yasin muhyiddin yassin Muhyiddin, who is also education minister, said the ministry should have the capacity to produce performance reports in fields other than academic, including sports.

"In this way, perceptions that the ministry was overly focused on the academic field can be overcome," he said when launching the track and field championships of the Malaysian Schools Sports Council at the Larkin Stadium in Johore Baharu.

Muhyiddin said a change in the school curriculum to make it more exciting and attractive was one of the aspects to be emphasised in the education transformation plan to be implemented next year.

He said sports could provide a huge impact to the transformation process in line with the education philosophy to produce students who were well-balanced in terms of the physical, emotional, spiritual and intellectual sense.

The deputy prime minister said that in line with the education transformation plan, the policy of one pupil taking up at least one sport would be implemented beginning next year, in the effort to restore excitement in school sports.

"This policy is not something new because sports is a mandatory activity in the school. It cannot be denied that sports is suitable and needful for the growth of children," he said.

Muhyiddin also said that Malaysia would host the second Asean School Games in July, and would have to prepare athletes to excel in the championships.
