A top PAS leader in Kedah has deemed ‘illogical' Chief Minister Azizan Abdul Razak's plan to call for elections if there was any more defections from Pakatan Rakyat.

NONE State PAS deputy commissioner Hassan Abdul Razak ( right ) denied there was such a call when the PAS led PR government has enough seats even if there were a couple more defections from coalition partners PKR or DAP.

Hassan, also Azizan's political secretary, added that for the CM to dissolve the assembly, the former would have to get the consent of the state ruler.

"The implications (for a state election) are great, but why do we need one when PAS has enough seats in the assembly to maintain the government," he queried, while presenting his speech at a ceramah in Permatang Pauh last night.

"We currently have 20 seats out of 36 in the State assembly, so even if the four reps - from PAS (3) and DAP (1) were to quit, we still have 16, we're still the majority" added the religious leader.

Hassan's statement repudiated the ‘warning' allegedly made by Azizan that he will dissolve the state assembly even if there were only one more defection within the coalition.

This also puts into question PKR election director and Sungai Petani MP Johari Abdul's insistence that Azizan was serious about the matter and the warning was issued directly to the remaining non-PAS assemblypersons .

The four are expected to be at a PAS ceramah in Kota Sarang Semut on Saturday to ‘brief' the public about their loyalty to the PR government.

No defections from PAS

Meanwhile, Hassan was very confident that there would be no defections from PAS.

"Our ADUNs (state assemblypersons) do not defect because we have trained them well," he said, though this might be construed as a direct criticism against the reps in PKR, which has seen a spate of resignations, especially at the height of by-election campaigns.

"We do not have kataks (frogs), nor do we have monyets (monkeys) within our party," he quipped.

Hassan said PAS reps were ‘trained' to cherish their political struggle because through their loyalty and steadfastness, they can obtain mercy from Allah .

"Our MPs or ADUNs (from PAS) are very expensive, can anyone afford them?" he joked.

"I don't think they would want to defect when merely offered RM1mil or 2mil," he added.

Hassa explained why there were rumours of defections circulating around Kedah, and attributed it to Umno's failed attempt at luring their reps from the PR fold.

"When our people are contacted by certain quarters, and offered some amount of money, they often reply by saying - ‘only RM1 mil? We would consider if it is RM1bil' - so this has been misconstrued as planning to defect," he clarified.

BN has repeatedly denied that they were bribing PR representatives to defect, saying that these accusations were merely an excuse to cover weaknesses due to loss of confidence in the coalition's leadership.
