Jeff Ooi lambasted over sedition threat

Jemey: It's outrageous for Jelutong parliamentarian Jeff Ooi to invoke the Sedition Act when it suits him. Regardless of whether his opponent is from Gerakan or whichever party, to threaten them with sedition is uncalled for and outrageous.

Ferdtan: Jeff Ooi is wrong to threaten the Penang Electromagnetic Field Protection Coalition with the Sedition Act, which his own party abhors. It is good that this group of activists are exercising their democratic rights for the good of Penang people.

But hold on a second - are they really sincere or is it just politics? By having this Dr Thor Teong Gee, who is a Gerakan leader, as advisor lends strength to the credo that there is a political motive behind this campaign.

Come on, the whole of Malaysia is engulfed by big companies which are given licences for such wireless projects and you, the so-called ‘activists', kept silent. Don't be a hypocrite.

Jeff Ooi has said it very clearly - the state government will adhere to the safety limits set by Health Ministry and the MCMC (Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission). What more do you want? These 'activists' are barking up the wrong tree.

Voice Myself: When I read the first line and noticed the name of the coalition, I thought, ‘Wow, this sounds good. The coalition must be some sort of expert or research group, or something.'

But when I scroll down further, the name of the coalition advisor rang a bell. I remember this individual is a BN guy. So suddenly it made sense.

When did this guy suddenly become the coalition advisor? When did this coalition start? Did this coalition start after the implementation of the ‘wireless state' proposal? If yes, was this coalition formed for the purpose of finding fault with the implementation of wireless project?

If they have very strong and sufficient proof of the dangers, they should approach the state government to solve the matter. There, they can rope in those experts from MCMC as well.

Why were the tests conducted using their own money? Why go around warning people of the dangers? Are you really sure that it will pose dangers to residents if the wireless usage is above a certain level?

These are the questions that I want to pose to the Electromagnetic Field Protection Coalition. If the answer is yes, then go through the proper channel. Go and see the state government. Go to MCMC.

I think something is not right with this coalition.

Iikie Detector: Before we go further, show us the proof that Jeff Ooi threatened to use the Sedition Act. He has no power at all to ‘use' this act. Only attorney-general has the power to prosecute.

So someone is not telling the truth. The public will be the judge. No amount of huffing and puffing will hide one's true intentions.

Lim Shiang Mey: This group has been warning residents about how dangerous it will be should the electromagnetic level in the area exceed the safety level.

But that's the problem. Do they have any proof that the electromagnetic field level in any part of Penang exceeds the safety level? They said they have conducted tests at their own expenses, but they have never revealed any of the test results.

So why are they going round and round spreading ‘rumours'? These rumours are scaring some residents who may not be so well-educated. And they say it has nothing to do with politics?

Matrix: I'm with Jeff Ooi. It's so obvious what the intention of this so-called 'expert' group is. And the person barking is a Gerakan member.

Jeff Ooi has put it very plainly. Gerakan is with the BN coalition. They can raise the issue at the federal level so that MCMC can look into it. Jeff Ooi has already said they are complying with all the MCMC standards. If MCMC is not satisfied, then MCMC should complain.

This is really another BN ‘project' to create chaos.

Anonymous: The levels of exposure to electromagnetic radiation arising from cellular phone usage considerably exceeds the potential exposure from Wi-Fi. Cellular phone radiation comes from both telecommunication towers and from talking for hours through a handset right next to the ear, or even when using hands-free kits.

Having said that, I agree Jeff Ooi should not have used words which could be construed as threats. That's exactly the style of government which Penangites overwhelmingly rejected in the last general elections.

Jeff, you want to use this (Sedition Act) against the people who, as citizens, brought up the issue in a democratic country? You are no different from BN.

Ong: Will the Penang Electromagnetic Field Protection Coalition tell us how many of their members do not use mobile phones? The same question goes to all others who are against telco towers being built "too close" to their homes.

How close is "too close"? Everyone wants to use mobile phones but no one wants to have telco towers built near their homes.

Mobile phones don't work without antennas and the transceivers.
