Troubled by unabated police shootings - this time in Johor Bahru - DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang has proposed for Pakatan Rakyat to organise another parliamentary roundtable on police shootings.

lim kit siang 111204 "If the cabinet remains blind and deaf to public concerns about the deteriorating standards of police efficiency, accountability and professionalism, especially on trigger-happy police shootings, DAP and Pakatan Rakyat will make this a top priority issue," he said in a blog posting today.

Lim was referring to a police shooting fatality involving 18-year-old Mohd Afham Arin in October last year.

Mohd Afham’s mother Sapiah Elah, 52, from Simpang Waha Felda, Kota Tinggi yesterday called for an independent commission to investigate the fatal shooting of her son.

Lim also said that on Wednesday last week, a police report was lodged by Port Klang operator, 25-year-old Sharil Azlan Ahmad Kamil who alleged he was shot at a roadblock in Shah Alam in April last year.

azlan These two accounts of police shootings, he said, were similar to past cases of alleged police firearms abuse and were a direct reminder of the fatal police shooting of 14-year-old student Aminulrasyid Amzah in Shah Alam.

Lim reminded the cabinet of his May 12 tweeter message to them asking for a royal commission of inquiry to end the spate of trigger-happy police shootings which have resulted in mounting fatalities.

‘Revisit police royal commission report’

The royal commission, he insisted, should inquire into all cases of police shootings involving seemingly innocent members of the public.

"The surfacing of these new cases of fatal police killings has strengthened the case for such a royal commission of inquiry," he added.

royal police commission report and custodial deaths Lim said the roundtable, if constituted, will see the involvement of NGOs and civil society during the next 22-day parliamentary sitting which begins on June 7.

According to the DAP leader, the roundtable will also revisit the Royal Commission Report of 2005 and its 125 recommendations to create an ‘efficient, incorruptible, professional and world-class police service’.

Last year, Pakatan organised the first parliamentary roundtable on police behavior which saw the participation of about 30 MPs including Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim.

That roundtable , among others, called for the resignation of inspector-general of police Musa Hassan.
