Raids by the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) found that most entertainment outlets in hotels and restaurants in Langkawi are using pirated CDs.

Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM) operation director Abdul Rahman Ghazali hopes that operators would use original CDs and sought RIM approval to spin songs to avoid prosecution.

"RIM will continue to monitor entertainment outlets in this resort island," he told reporters after an operation against pirated CDs in the island last night.

Meanwhile, Langkawi KPDNKK enforcement chief Azmi Dan said the team raided an entertainment centre and seized 73 pirated CDs and audio equipments worth  RM7,000.

He said the anti-piracy operation, the first of its kind in Langkawi, was made folowing a complaint from RIM.

"Errant entertainment outlet operators can be charged under the Copyright Act 1987," he added.
