The Home Ministry has no plans to abolish the Sedition Act 1948 as its provisions are still relevant in navigating the multiracial make-up of the country, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Its minister Hishammuddin Hussein said the act was necessary to maintain national security and the harmony and welfare of the society.
"Although the police received only 10 reports on racial issues, the act is still relevant to curb racial issues from becoming more serious," he said in a written answer at the Dewan Rakyat today.
He was responding to a question from Chong Eng (DAP-Bukit Mertajam) who wanted to know whether there were plans to repeal the Sedition Act 1948 and replaced by the Race Relations Act.
