We must defend Putrajaya at all costs: Najib

Passing Cloud: "Even if our bodies are crushed and our lives lost, brothers and sisters, whatever happens, we must defend Putrajaya," so declares Prime Minister Najib Razak when he was frantically beating the war drums at the 61st Umno general assembly.

"Such strong words, such show of total desperation indeed," so remarks the man-in-the-street.

Najib has to be mindful that Pakatan Rakyat will not sit idly by. It's gearing up to launch a concerted assault on Putrajaya in the coming election. But both coalitions need to be responsible and moderate in speech and actions.

Irresponsible and extreme rhetoric could cause the loss of precious votes and defeat, as the electorates can't be cowered and oppressed anymore. They have matured and changed their thinking.

Play by the rules. If BN wins, it wins; if it loses, it loses. There's no need to threaten the loss of life.

Changeagent: Umno keeps harping in the mainstream media about Anwar Ibrahim's obsession with becoming the prime minister. It seems that Najib is the real desperado here, wanting so madly to cling on to the position.

Dingy: Heed Najib's words that Umno will defend Putrajaya at all cost. It just means that he doesn't intend to hand over power even if defeated in the general election. It'll be emergency rule when Umno created unrest as an excuse to hold on to power. Just wait and see.

Cala: Who exactly is the master of the land? By uttering such mindless rhetoric, Najib is alienating himself with the rakyat, himself with the Malays (as Khairy Jamaluddin has admitted that half the Malays are not Umno supporters).

If its leadership has been acting irresponsibly (which is a fact anyway), what is there to defend the seat of power? Is he not subscribing to the principle of democracy? To continue to do so is at its own peril, as it is pitting itself against the interest of the people. The people are the master of this land, not Umno members.

Lonestar: In previous years, it was the May 13 bogeyman and the 1Keris. Now we have "the primordial instincts", which if badly managed can unleash "large-scale acts of cruelty" (kezaliman yang sangat dahsyat).

It looks like the scare tactics are still there. So where is the change or inclusiveness? Umno speaks with forked-tongue. Rakyat beware. It looks like Umno will defend Putrajaya at all cost in the 13 th general election.

Superman: Our PM has spoken. Why the hue and cry? Remember any democratic country depends on the votes of the citizens. That's the power and that's what is going to determine who walks up the stairs of Putrajaya.

If Umno understands the call of the rakyat, then they will be there for sure. The rakyat determine.

Kgen: Where's your keris, Mr PM? How unbecoming to equate defending the country to defending your party. What has Putrajaya got to do with your corrupt, racist and decrepit party?

Anonymous: I have a dream of personally seeing Nik Aziz Nik Mat walking up the stairs in Putrajaya. It's sort of like a son seeing his own father reaping the rewards of his son's career achievements. These Umno goons, who have been milking the country dry, don't deserve Putrajaya. Just look at the Istana Zakaria in Klang and your heart ached. How many more istanas have gone unreported?

Eugene: Read between Najib's lines and you get a disturbing feeling that his speech is a veiled threat. Is Najib saying they will go all out with jihad-like attitude to prevent a switch of government? We must be wary of what Umno will do to hang on to power.

Swipenter: Those who rape and plunder the country's riches for themselves, for their family members, for their cronies and their friends are the real traitors to the country and to Malaysians whom they were suppose to help. We all know Umnoputras are synonymous with racism, corruption and abuse of power.

Isana: Umno is just like an old boxer being punished and pushed to a corner, both legs wobbling, eyes swollen with vision nearly blurred, no more power in both hands yet trying hard to fling one last punch for a lucky shot at the opponent.

It just needs one more solid hard punch from the much stronger and younger opponent to send this old worn-out fighter into retirement. It will be a knock-out come the next GE.

Ruben: PM Najib, Don't be so dramatic. If you want to remain in Putrajaya. Give Malaysians back our dignity. Give us back good and transparent governance. Be genuine and implement your 1Malaysian dream.

Come out openly like Mohd Nazri Abdul Aziz and say that you are a Malaysian first. Start weeding out corruption and cronyism and reform the NEP where efforts must be to focus on the poor and marginalised Malaysians irrespective of race so that they have the chance to break out of the poverty cycle.

Have a geniune concern for the welfare of all Malaysians. Work on the economy to develop our country so that the growth is real and sustainable. Redeem the independence of the judiciary. Putrajaya will then be yours for a long time.

Loh Lean Cheng: To all commentators, why make such a noise? It is Najib's right to say anything he wants under the law.

Here's a quote from French philosopher Voltaire: "How abominably unjust to persecute a man for such an airy trifle as that. I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it."

What Najib has said is not a crime in absolute terms. Please do not abuse this one sentence from him and blow up an issue as trivial as this.

RR: Najib had built a good momentum of moderation over the last few weeks. But he destroyed it by his rash outburst - "even if our bodies are crushed and we lost our lives". This is no moderation. It is a war cry.

It frightens the rakyat especially senior citizens like me. The opposition has no means to crush anybody to death. They are themselves very weak and disunited. Najib's outburst is uncalled for. He should moderate his speech and should not send the wrong signals to the extremists of whom he himself have been warning in recent days, including at the United Nations.

Kunta Kinte: Who are they defending Putrajaya from? It sounds like our neighbouring country is trying to bomb Putrajaya. Pakatan leaders are not rebels. They have the same intention like BN to govern this beautiful country.

If the people choose Pakatan, so be it. BN does not have to pay the price with their own lives. Just be a good opposition.
