The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and police have completed their investigations of 15 cases of alleged slander by blogs and portals.

Information, Communication and Culture Minister Rais Yatim said today that a report of the investigations had been submitted to the Attorney-General for further action.

“It is now up to the Attorney-General to decide whether to proceed to prosecute the blogs and portals concerned,” he told reporters on the sidelines of the Umno general assembly in Kuala Lumpur.

Several delegates at the assembly had called for stern action against blogs whom they alleged had put out false reports that threatened harmony in the country.

Rais said he agreed that the laws governing the Internet should be tightened and that stern action be taken against those who abused it.

He said that his ministry, the Attorney-General’s office and the Home Ministry had agreed that such action be taken against offenders.

He said the laws of the land must be adhered to even in cyber space.
