Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar said campaigning for the past five days for the by-election for the Galas state constituency on Nov 4 had been relatively peaceful.

He said only four police reports have been filed and they were minor cases and did not pose any threat to national peace.

"There were other minor incidents that we managed to control and we are investigating.

NONE "For example, the incidents where flags were burnt by several irresponsible people are still being investigated," he told reporters after visiting members of the security forces in Galas, Gua Musang, today.

On Thursday, there were incidents where BN and Umno flags were burnt early in the morning in Kampung Lembaga.

Ismail ( left ) hoped members of the public would not make any assumptions that could lead to disturbances during polling day on Nov 4.

He said the voters should not worry about going out to cast their votes.

"I have inspected the preparations made by the police and interviewed the officers who had been given certain responsibilities and I am sure we will achieve our objective of a peaceful polling day," he said.

On the detention of four students of tertiary institutions, who were also members of the Gabungan Mahasiswa Islam Se-Malaysia (GAMIS) yesterday, Ismail said the police did not detain them but merely took statements from them to confirm their identity and to ascertain whether they were voters in the constituency or outsiders.
