DAP youth has blasted today’s police arrest of Teoh Lee Lan and three members from the ‘Malaysians for Beng Hock’ movement during their visit to the Galas by-election.

The police have alleged that the group had contravened Section 4A (1) of the Election Offences Act by engaging in campaigning activities at the by-election.

“What is wrong with a member of the rakyat campaigning in any election to voice his or her dissatisfaction to the leaders or candidates?” questioned the DAP Komtar assemblyperson.

“If the four persons arrested are not supposed to be campaigning to influence the choice of candidate, then what of the Barisan Nasional supporters who try so hard to do the same in Galas?”

“This just shows that the leaders do not want to heed the voice of the people, to the extent that they are abusing the power of the police to make arrests without reasonable grounds,” said Ng.

The eight-member ‘Malaysians for Beng Hock’ movement were arrested this afternoon while they were walking along the road to their vehicles, allegedly for engaging in ‘campaigning’ activities at the Kelantan constituency that faces a by-election this week.

‘What about Teoh’s police report?’

Ng pointed out the irony that only yesterday, the movement had lodged a police report against alleged ill-treatment at the hands of MCA officials at a function where senator Sai Heng Kie was speaking.

NONE The incident took place as the group attempted to meet the senator to raise their concerns for custodial deaths and victims of police abuse, and in particular to push for a royal commission on Beng Hock, who was found dead on July 16 last year after questioning by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission.

“A police report was made regarding the incident, yet even before any police action has been initiated, it is the complainants who end up arrested by the police,” he said.

 

“This proves that the police only give special protection to BN leaders, and not to the ordinary rakyat who have been harmed as a result of BN’s actions,” he said.

Ng says DAP youth demands the immediate release of all four members of the movement as well as an apology from the MCA members involved, saying that in particular, Heng ought to apologise to all Malaysians and the voters of Galas constituency.

“If not, the people who uphold the principles of justice need to seize the opportunity at this by-election to teach a huge lesson to the BN, who are increasingly arrogant such that they can dismiss the voice of the people in such inhumane ways.”
