Muhyiddin: BN's back in business

Ben: When Dr Mahathir Mohamad was in power in the 1980s, the number of civil servants was about 800,000. He had remarked then that the ratio of civil servants to the population of our country was one of the highest in this region.

So he went on to privatise/corporatise many government departments. As such, we have witnessed the birth of privatised/ corporatised entities such as TNB, Telekom, water supply concessionaires, MAS, Pos Malaysia, KTM, health services, highways, transportation, etc.

With his policies being implemented, the logical results should be a reduction of the numbers of civil servants and the government should have saved in terms of salaries and pensions. Instead, today we have 1.2 million civil servants. Why?

Privatised entities should be accompanied by significant increased competition and production to bring down costs. But instead, consumers are burdened with increased costs of services and utilities consistently.

Has the Mahathir policy benefited the rakyat? No, only his cronies.

Anonymous: Best civil servants in the world? You are blowing your own trumpet, DPM Muhyiddin Yassin. Ask the public about your civil service and they'll have a lot to say.

Don't be blown away by your victory (in Batu Sapi and Galas). The rural and the semi-rural voters can be voting for you, but not the urban ones. Try to work for the lower-income people and the needy Malays - that will save the country.

Compare: Muhyiddin Yassin certainly does not know what he is talking about - best civil service in the world? With whom is he comparing us with? Pakistan or Rwanda?

Get real - with the amount of money pumped into the civil service, we should be comparing ourselves with Singapore, which has an efficient, corruption-free and dedicated civil service. Here, our civil servants are clocking in early morning, and after that, disappearing for coffee.

Why don't you go on random checks and see for yourself before you come up with a sweeping statement like this?

Freemsia: When the DPM says we have the best civil servants in the world, he is just trying get support from the civil servants. He is hoping they will vote for BN come 13 th general elections.

Joe Lee: There are certainly excellent civil servants, but Malaysians have largely suffered at the hands of many insolent civil servants who have a preference to syok sendiri .

The Malaysian civil service is a Third World service manned by people with a 'developing world' mentality. Malaysia would be lucky if it had a civil services on par with the advanced countries in 100 years.

Sceptic: It is ironic that the boss of the civil service is praising his own workers when the consumers have said nothing about it. Muhyiddin, self-praise is no praise. You want your civil service to be regarded as the best, convince the one who's paying your salary and the salaries of those servants.

There is nothing wrong in the taxpayers demanding for better services. After all, that's where our money goes to. It's a very simple business idea. You satisfy the customers with what they want, in return the customers satisfy you with what you want.

So, stop kissing yourself. No one's planning to do that to you, either.

Ericlcc: Best civil service in the world? Maybe DPM have been misquoted. Best among the third world countries is a possibility. I'll drink to that!

Now with a simple job being done by many staff, I think it is the best civil service when it comes to manpower-to-performance ratio. Every staff member has to put in a few minutes work per hour per day and we have an efficient service.

Morever, the civil service are outsourcing simple tasks such as writing speeches and papers to the private sector. Now isn't the job of civil servants today rosy and easy? High pay, less work, outsourcing, praises, more holidays in a year, etc.

Now I wonder, who is actually losing - the people, the country, or the image of civil servants?

P Dev Anand Pillai: Don't blame Muhyiddin, blame those who continuously vote in the best government in the world which in turn produces the best civil service in the world.

With this new tag of the best civil service in the world and with two fantastic victories, the little Napoleons will be out there thumping their chest to say that they were right from the beginning.

Stop talking in a patronising way about the people of Kedah. It is the people's right to get help when disasters happened. What do you mean they are all our people? You mean there are those who are not your people? I know what you are thinking - Kedah is a Pakatan Rakyat-controlled state, and despite that, the federal government under BN is willing to help out.

Please don't talk rubbish. The federal government has collected revenue and exploited national resources from all states in Malaysia. It is the right of the people to get their share of the federal treasury's coffer.

It is not compassion on your part, it is your duty and responsibility.
