The number of evacuees in Kedah dropped further this evening as floodwaters continued to recede, but there is fear the high tide could worsen the situation in Kuala Kedah.

A spokesperson of the National Security Council flood operations room said the number of evacuees has dropped to 16,915, with 11,496 of them in the Kota Setar district and 5,419 in Kubang Pasu.

They were being housed at 41 relief centres, 29 of which were in Kota Setar and 12 in Kubang Pasu, he said.

A spokesperson of the Kedah Education Department flood operations room said 27 schools remained closed, 22 of them in Kota Setar and five in Kubang Pasu.

Only three roads remained impassable due to floodwaters - Jalan Titi Besi-Kampung Pasir, Jalan Gunung Keriang-Sungai Korok and Jalan Kuala Sungai-Sungai Baru.

A check by Bernama revealed that many flood victims in this capital city were busy cleaning their houses.
