Kuala Selangor PAS member of Parliament Dzulkefly Ahmad was booted out of the Dewan Rakyat today over an uproar in the House regarding the religious faith of the boy who was caned for bringing fried rice and pork sausages to school.

NONE Dzulkefly ( right ) was angered by the argument raised by Zulkifli Noordin (Ind-Kulim Bandar Baharu) that the boy's father is a Muslim who goes by the name of Norazman Abdullah @ Beginda anak Minda, and that it was "not proper" for a Muslim to have taken haram (forbidden) food to school.

"If the father is Muslim, the boy is also a Muslim by default," said Zulkifli.

However, Dzulkefly said the issue in question is not the boy's religion but the senior school administrator's punishment of the boy.

Zulkifli then accused "PAS of endorsing consumption of pork by Muslims", provoking Dzulkefly to lash out verbally.

Marching orders

Dzulkefly refused to budge despite continuously being told to resume his seat by deputy speaker Wan Junaidi Jaafar, who then ordered him to leave the House until 2.30pm.

Just before Dzulkefly was kicked out, Chong Chieng Jen (DAP-Bandar Kuching) interjected, demanding to know whether Zulkifli had probed the boy's background.

"I want to know where you got the information... have you checked his birth certificate to verify he is a Muslim?

"The school administrator who caned the boy has apologised... (it should be noted that the father) is also not Muslim and the boy is also not Muslim," he pointed out.

"He was also a witness in (one of) Permatang Pauh's (Anwar Ibrahim's) trials," he alleged.

Dzulkefly retorted that the Dewan Rakyat is not the appropriate platform to discuss the issue of the boy's religious identity and that the time allocated for debate is not sufficient to clarify the matter.

But Zulkifli refused to back down and continued to heckle the PAS representative to the extent of accusing the Islamist party of condoning the consumption of pork by Muslims.

" Kamu sokong anak orang Muslim bawa babi ke sekolah (you support Muslim childrentaking pork to school)," Zulkifli said.

"I speak with facts - the father is a Muslim. I have dealt with him (before)."

'Religious bigotry'

Dzulkefly accused the legislator of worsening the issue through religious bigotry. The shouting match went on until he demanded that Zulkifli should withdraw his remarks.

Zulkifli then walked NONE up to Kuala Selangor MP's seat to further egg him on, as observed on the live transmission feed on television at the Parliament lobby.

At a press conference soon after, Chong said he had spoken to the boy's mother and she had confirmed that her son is not a Muslim.

Chong showed the couple's marriage certificate and the boy's birth certificate, stating that the father is not a follower of any religion. The mother is Christian.

"The reason why I stood up was because I could not stand it - this religious bigotry being perpetrated by Zul Noordin," said Dzulkefly.

"We do not want this to go on, at a time where racial fault-lines are very tense. This is the kind of extremist practice we do not want to see."

Also with him at the press conference were 10 MPs from PAS, PKR and DAP.

Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua said he was disappointed that the deputy speaker did not act against Zulkifli, although "everyone" had seen his behaviour in Parliament.

"Kulim Bandar Baru taunted, made fun of, and provoked Kuala Selangor right in front of the speaker," he added.
