The government has been urged to review certain policies that are no longer effective and failed to meet their objectives.

Senator Firdaus Abdullah said certain policies were not implemented effectively while others were hardly understood by the people.

"Policies that are not working well should be reviewed. They must be down to earth while the implementation must be monitored to ensure that the objectives are achieved," he said when debating the Supply Bill 2011 at the Dewan Negara today.

He also suggested that government policies should be taught in the primary and secondary schools and disseminated to the public.

"The public should know the aims and functions of government policies, and how they could benefit from them. For example, what is the National Cultural Policy and how many people know about it?" he said.

Firdaus said government policies that were no longer relevant should be among the first to be reviewed.

He said the implementation of the National Language Policy left much to be desired in protecting the country's official language.

The sitting resumes on Monday.
