The second Pakatan Rakyat convention than begins on Sunday will try to showcase it is a better alternative to the Barisan Nasional, PAS supreme council member Mujahid Yusof Rawa said.

Mujahid, who is Parit Buntar MP and Penang PAS deputy commissioner, said among the issues discussed would be Pakatan's view on Malay issues, federalism, pluralism and distribution of wealth, which will be discussed by the presidents of the three Pakatan partners.

"It will be an opportunity for Pakatan to showcase that it is better than the BN," he said of the convention. It is our objective that if Pakatan comes to power, we will try to increase household income to RM4,000, compared with RM3,500 at present."

NONE What is important, said Mujahid ( right ), the youngest son of former PAS president Yusof Rawa, is that Pakatan will at the convention define the concept of sovereignty of Malays and the related issues.

Pakatan, he said, wants to see Malays empowered as enshrined under the constitution, without violating the rights of others.

"This definition of Malays is different from the 'ketuanan Melayu' concept that has been widely publicised. Furthermore, we hope Pakatan's concept of federalism, where the national wealth will be distributed fairly, will also attract the people," he said.

"People from Sabah and Sarawak can certainly identify themselves with our objective of increasing the household income. Our bid to review the concept of federalism will make Pakatan, for them, a viable alternative," Mujahid said.

This is the second Pakatan Rakyat convention after last year's event in Selangor, where the colaition's Common Policy Framework was introduced for PKR, PAS and DAP to work on.

Showcase of Pakatan states

The Pakatan convention, according to Mujahid, would see 1,800 delegates, 600 each from the three coalition partners, attending the two-day event in Kepala Batas, where the Pakatan state governments would present their successes in administering their states.

NONE "There will be 10 display booths set up for the Penang, Selangor, Kedah and Kelantan governments, as well as two booths for the former Perak and Terengganu governments to also highlight their achievements," he said.

The convention, Mujahid added, would be a good opportunity for the opposition state governments to promote their achievements.

Asked to comment on the Malaysian Civil Liberties Movement and Zaid Ibrahim's reported moved to revamp little-known Angkatan Keadilan Insan Malaysia (Akim), which he took over as president recently, as Kesejahteraan Insan Tanahair (Kita), Mujahid said their strength remained to be seen and tested.

"These parties do not have grassroots support compared with the parties within Pakatan," he said.
