The Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) today called on the Employees Provident Fund (EPF) to conduct a year-round campaign to get members to nominate their beneficiaries.

"It is not enough to just have a 10-day campaign as is being done now," said its vice-president A Balasubramaniam.

"While we appreciate the fund’s initiative in conducting the campaign, it should not have a time frame for it to be effective, he told Bernama in Kuala Lumpur.

The current campaign by the EPF to encourage members to nominate their beneficiaries started on Dec 13 and would end on Sunday.  

Balasubramaniam said it was important for members to nominate their beneficiaries to ensure that their savings were passed on to them with least hassle upon their death.

As of the third quarter this year, 4.25 million members have nominated their beneficiaries, compared to 3.29 million in the corresponding period last year.

EPF general manager for public relations Nik Affendi Jaafar had said that in the case of non-Muslims, a member's savings would be given directly to the nominee.

 

For Muslim members, the nominee would act as the administrator responsible for distributing the savings in accordance with Faraid Law, and a nomination superseded a written will, he said.   

The EPF had said that without proper nomination it would be time-consuming and difficult for beneficiaries to claim their dues.
