The Selangor Malay Sand Mining Operators Action Consortium today called on the relevant authority to take action against those involved in sand mining activities at the Batu Tiga exit of the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE).

Its chairman, Tengku Shaiffuliazan Tengku Zainal Abidin, claimed that their activities, which had been going on for several months without a permit, had caused the bridge structure at Sungai Damansara to crack.

"Before the sand mining activities, the river water under the bridge was clean and swift flowing, but now the river has become shallow and the water, muddy," he told reporters during a survey to the area in Shah Alam today.

He said action should be taken by the Selangor government for public safety.

"What puzzles me is how can the sand mining activities go on with no action taken by the state government," he added.

A survey by Bernama on the area found there were several mining equipment items there, but there was no mining activity. It is believed the operators stopped work after they became aware of the media presence.
