The east coast of peninsular Malaysia offers a potential huge market for broadband services, said Maxis Communications Bhd.

Its east coast regional manager Mazlan Mokhtar said the residents there were among the most active users of online social networks or the Internet compared to other areas in the country.

"According to a study, Internet traffic among residents in Terengganu and Kelantan was among the highest in the country.

"For Maxis, this offers a huge potential for our broadband services," he said.

Mazlan said the company's broadband packages, which catered to different categories of users and age groups, had managed to attract more subscribers.

"Maxis provides a fast broadband speed of 7.2 megabits per second for as low as RM48 a month. This, however, will depend on location, distance from the telecommunications tower and the number of users simultaneously," he said.

He said the company's football modems, which were different from others, were popular  among the younger generation.

Mazlan said potential users were also given a seven-day trial period for the broadband services.

"If they are unhappy with the services, they can cancel the contract and whatever amount they have paid will be returned," he said.

He said Maxis planned to widen the broadband coverage to rural areas like Felda settlements next year.

"Although we are still new to the east coast market, our broadband services have been well-received. We hope to increase the number of users next year," he said.
