Jailed ex-deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim has filed a notice to appeal to the Federal Court against the appellate court's decision today to uphold the sodomy conviction and nine year-jail sentence meted out to him.

His lawyer Sankara Nair said he had filed the notice at the Court of Appeal registry this afternoon so that the matter could be brought up at the highest court in the land.

"Like us, our client is not satisfied with today's decision which he described as a 'travesty'.

"Although he is doubtful of getting a positive outcome (at the Federal Court), he has instructed us to file the notice of appeal," he said.

Meanwhile lawyer Gobind Singh Deo - the counsel for Anwar's co-accused Sukma Darmawan Sasmitaat Madja ( photo ) - also said a similar notice of appeal was filed to set aside his conviction and sentence of six years jail and four strokes of the rotan.

Sukma was today ordered to serve his sentence after justices Pajan Singh Gill, Richard Malanjum and Hashim Mohd Yusof revoked his RM50,000 bail.

No justice

Aside from dismissing the appeal, the court had also declined to hear both of their oral applications for bail.

Instead, the judges ordered the two to file a formal application. This irked Anwar who immediately stood up and expressed his dissatisfaction with the ruling which he claimed was "unfair and absurd".

The ex-deputy premier, who was sacked from his position in 1998, also called the three judges "spineless".

His supporters, who were seated in the public gallery, started booing the judges and criticising them, with some going to the extent of calling them "stupid judges".

"Useless court", "No justice", were among the other taunts that reverberated throughout the courtroom and the situation calmed down o­nly when Anwar requested them to be quiet.

The three judges were escorted do their chambers by several police personnel after the hearing.

Meanwhile, a sombre atmosphere engulfed the courtroom as Sukma removed his coat and personal belongings before he was handcuffed and taken away.

Anwar's wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and their children as well as close relatives and friends were moved to tears as he was led away.

The 39-year-old Indonesian national is Anwar's adopted brother and a former boutique owner.
