'MCA, lead by example in telling SUPP to reject posts'

Lim Guan Eng blasted MCA president Chua Soi Lek’s hypocrisy in calling SUPP not to accept any cabinet posts as the Sarawak party had lost its Chinese support following its humiliating performance at the state polls.

NONE Lim ( right ), the DAP secretary general, pointed out that both MCA and Gerakan had also lost the community’s support in the last general election, and yet had accepted federal and state exco posts.

“Is Chua not practising double-standards when Chua did not ask Koh Tsu Koon, after Tsu Koon lost the 2008 general elections badly, not to go through the back-door of being appointed a senator and a cabinet minister?

“Why then did Chua not object to MCA joining the cabinet and accepting ministerial posts after MCA had lost badly in the 2008 general elections?” said Lim in a statement today.

chua soi lek supp ceramah 120411 Star today reported the MCA president telling fellow BN component party SUPP to reject any posts in the Sarawak cabinet.

“If it takes part in the cabinet, I feel the Chinese of Sarawak would think it (SUPP) is there only for the seats and not to serve the community,” Chua ( left ) told the English daily.

Chua added that while SUPP should stick with BN, accepting cabinet posts would only expose the party to continued attacks from the opposition.

“As such, it is better for SUPP to stay out,” Chua was reported saying.

‘Lead by example’

Lim challenged Chua to follow his own advice to SUPP.

“If Chua is genuine, then he should instruct Perak MCA exco Mah Hang Soon to resign immediately as MCA won only one state seat in the last 2008 general election.

Among the other MCA leaders that DAP had in the past criticised for accepting senate and cabinet posts without electoral support are Heng Seai Kie, Donald Lim and Gan Ping Shou.

Lim, who is also Penang chief minister, also slammed the MCA president for following Umno-linked Malay daily Utusan Malaysia in racialising last Sarawak election results.

Utusan , said  Lim, has called for BN to “ignore Chinese voters just because they supported the opposition”.

sarawak election kuching dap ceramah 160411 04 Utusan Malaysia ’s open call ... is not only racist but also against the very tenets of democracy. If BN takes punitive action against urban voters, the Chinese community and anyone for exercising their democratic rights to vote for the opposition, then what is the point of holding elections?” said Lim.

BN has also been harping that by not supporting its local Chinese party Sarawak Chinese were putting their representation in the state cabinet on the line.

‘I wish to reiterate that DAP’s theme and focus in this Sarawak state general elections is not SUPP but on Sarawak Chief Minister Taib Mahmud; not about whether the Chinese want representation in government but whether all voters want change,” said Lim.

Meanwhile DAP veteran Lim Kit Siang said in his Twitter that by Chua’s logic, “all the four MCA ministers and seven deputy ministers should not be in Prime Minister Najib Razak’s cabinet” in addition to Perak exco Mah.

He slammed the MCA president for acting as if he was the “paramount Chinese leader” when the latter and Koh had “both flunked in the Sarawak election” to rally the Chinese behind SUPP.
