Valuable items placed in the coffin of an elderly man have gone missing after his grave at the Sungai Chua Christian cemetery in Kajang was dug up by unknown intruders.

Liew Ah Chow, 64, died on April 8.

Kajang acting police chief Supt Azman Ayob said police were notified of the incident after receiving a call from Liew’s son.

We believe that the incident happened on Tuesday night. Liew’s body was still in the coffin as the intruders were only interested in the valuable items,” he told Bernama when contacted yesterday.

Among the items stolen from the grave were coins and cash as well as a mobile phone estimated to be worth between RM200 and RM300 in total.  

        

Azman said the motive for the incident may likely be robbery as no sign of cult worship was found at the scene.

Several workers were reburying the coffin when Bernama visited the cemetery at noon yesterday.

Liew’s wife, Wan Foong Yin, 64, said she was shocked when told of the incident by one of her children.

“I immediately went to the cemetery and found that the coffin had been opened but my husband’s body was still inside it.

Wan said her late husband was a kind and generous man.

“He used to help me sell drinks at the market. He wasn’t the type who liked to pick up a fight with other people,” she added.

The case is being investigated under Section 297 of the Penal Code.
