Two Kuching DAP assemblypersons who had been re-elected in last Saturday’s state election are being investigated by police over an alleged illegal assembly during the last night of the campaign.

If they are charged and found guilty, the duo would lose their seats as well as qualification to stand in the next general election, which is due by 2013, because the offence carries a minimum fine of RM2,000 - the threshold to disqualify an elected representative.

NONE Three police officers from Kuching district police headquarters had recorded statements from Kota Sentosa assemblyperson Chong Chieng Jen and Pending assemblyperson Violet Yong this afternoon at Chong’s legal firm.

According to Chong, the party had applied for a permit to hold its grand finale ceramah on the night of April 15 using the address of a shop.

“Like the previous nine ceramah which had not encountered any problem, we held the ceramah at the open-air car park in front of the shop.

“But the police wanted us to move into the premises, which can only accommodate a few dozen people,” he said, questioning the police’s double standards.

They went against the police instructions and proceeded with the ceramah, which attracted a crowd of over 20,000.

The police, led by Kuching OCPD Mun Kok Keong, attempted to disperse the ceramah by storming the stage to stop the party leaders from speaking.

A scuffle broke out between the police and DAP supporters on the stage, but eventually the police gave up on their mission and left the stage.

Chong revealed that the police report against him and Yong was lodged by Mun.

“Mun is being a busybody, like the Chinese saying ‘a dog catching a mouse’. He should not turn the police into BN’s tool to oppress the opposition.

“That was during the election campaign period. The people have a right to know about the policies and ideology of political parties,” he added.

The Bandar Kuching MP also claimed that a police officer told him that night that they were instructed by SUPP to disrupt DAP’s ceramah.

“I urge SUPP to answer whether there was such an instruction,” he said, adding that this information had been included in his police statement.

“The police should fulfill their duty to fight crime and enhance public safety, not meddle in politics and become BN’s stooge.”
