The call by the Malay daily Utusan Malaysia for "1Melayu 1Bumi" is final confirmation of evidence that Prime Minister Najib Razak's "1Malaysia" campaign for nation-building is not serious but a mere vote-getting scam, says DAP stalwart Lim Kit Siang.

Lim, who is also Ipoh Timur MP, said Utusan 's call today for Umno to spearhead the 1Melayu-1Bumi movement along with other Malay-based organisations was not proper and that it was based on lies that DAP is intent on toppling the Malay leadership.

" Utusan Malaysia 's call today for Umno to spearhead a 1Melayu, 1Bumi movement involving all Malay parties, based on the lie and canard that the DAP is intent on toppling the country's Malay leadership, marks the culmination of a two-year anti-1Malaysia campaign by the Umno-owned daily," he said.

Lim said this was the old politics of race, which should give way to politics of Malaysian multi-racialism that the editors of Utusan Malaysia and their "real masters" were fighting against and fighting to their last breath.

He described the Utusan move as irresponsible and anti-national politicking at the gutter worst, of trying to pit race against race in plural Malaysia based on lies, calumnies and falsehoods.

Utusan Malaysia 's senior assistant editor Zaini Hassan in his column today had asked Umno to spearhead the movement to unify the Malays and the bumiputera, saying it would not go against the 1Malaysia concept.

Zaini wrote that Islamist party PAS was prepared to abandon the struggle of the Malays for its own political will, with the party (PAS) being silently used as a tool by the DAP for its own strategic purpose.

He called on Umno to spearhead the "1Melayu 1Bumi" move if PAS was not interested to join in, since there was an urgency to do so for the unification of the Malays.

Could cause racial tensions

If such racist and anti-national calls had been made earlier, Lim said, they would certainly have created racial tensions. However, he said, Malaysians were today more mature and could see through the hypocrisy of Utusan Malaysia 's 1Melayu 1Bumi call.

"Malaysians of all races want change, not because they are anti-Malay, anti-Chinese, anti-Indian, anti-Iban or anti-Kadazan, but because they do not want a small coterie of Malays, Chinese, Indians, Ibans and Kadazans camouflaging under the guise of race champions merely to feather their own nests."

"DAP has never been a political party for the Chinese, but a Malaysian political party for all Malaysians - Malays, Chinese, Indian, Ibans, Kadazans and the Orang Asli. In the 1969 general election, more Indian MPs were elected on the DAP ticket than the MIC. Malay DAP leaders have also been elected as MPs and state assemblypersons as well," he said.

NONE DAP, he said, was also the first pan-Malaysian political party with branches in the peninsula and in Sabah and Sarawak as well.

In the recent Sarawak election, the DAP's inroads came only after 33 years of hard toiling, with the blood, sweat and tears of Malaysians and Sarawakians who believe in a just and equal society for all the people, not just for any one ethnic group.

Lim said the irresponsible anti-national call of the Malay daily had put Najib in a spot as to whether he was prepared to bring Utusan Malaysia to toe the line and to discipline those blatantly challenging his 1Malaysia policy.

"Is he an Umno president who is not in full charge of Umno, ceding real Umno power to the Umno kingmakers lurking in the shadows? Utusan Malaysia 's 1Melayu 1Bumi call has also put all the other Barisan Nasional component parties to the test," he said.

He noted that Chua, when asked why MCA had not been consistent with regard to its ministers and deputy ministers in the federal cabinet after the party fared badly in the 2008 general election, Chua replied he had nothing to do with it and blamed former MCA president Ong Tee Keat.

However, it was Ong Ka Ting who was MCA president during the 2008 general election.

Chua, Lim added, did not explain why he did not direct its ministers and deputy ministers to resign from cabinet after taking over as MCA president, and instead ensured his son became a deputy minister and several of his confidantes as well entered the government through the Senate.

He challenged Chua to come out with MCA's official position on Utusan's 1Melayu 1 Bumi call.
