Fresh from defeat, Snap mulls going national

Kgen: After such a humiliating performance, Snap should just dissolve itself. As a Dayak party, they contested in Dayak-majority seats and lost their deposits in 25 out of 26 seats.

Snap should realise that the real reason for their humiliating defeat is the uncertainty of whether they are part of the opposition or a party waiting to rejoin BN. Based on how demanding Snap is in negotiating seats with PKR, I doubt they can work with Pakatan Rakyat.

Can their assemblymen be trusted not to hop to BN like what Pelagus state representative George Lagong is mulling?

Multi Racial: Edwin Dundang, it is clear that Snap lost every seat they contested and as president you should take full responsibility for the failure and resign.

The best approach for you is to call for an EGM (emergency general meeting) and propose to the party that it is to be dissolved and all members join DAP. Believe me, this is the only way to go for Snap members.

If you don't do that, Snap will die a slow death. This could be your last job as president - to secure the future of your members.

Sarajun Hoda: Both PKR and Snap were over-confident, stubborn and arrogant. So both lost badly in the elections. Going against BN was tough and they foolishly ignored the saying 'divided we fall.'

Kapten Pencen: I did comment in Malaysiakini before the state election that it would be considered a big success if none of the Snap candidates did not lose their deposit.

The one and only reason why Snap contested the election was to help BN by taking away some voters from the opposition in seats that was considered black or grey, and they succeeded.

Snap is irrelevant and has no following in Sarawak, I should know as I am Sarawakian. Another thing that was widely speculated before the election was whether the Snap candidates, if elected would jump ship.

George Lagong has just proven many people right. He is already preparing to ‘frog' to PRS. And he was supposed to be a Snap candidate. If Snap had won, we would be witnessing a ‘frogathon' in Sarawak now.

Lim Chong Leong: DAP should not welcome Snap. It was selfish and it decided to go for broke alone. They thought they could hold their own and even defeat Pakatan.

Now they hint they may merge with DAP? Of course, merge with the biggest opposition winners. They just want to hang on to others like a parasite and leave when they think they could win seats on their own. We don't need such people.

If Snap is sincere about the DAP cause, they should just dissolve the party and let its members join DAP.

Habib RAK: The infusion of Snap into DAP will be a step in the right direction. It will partly help DAP from overcoming its organic growth challenges. It accelerates infusion of more non-Chinese into DAP to help quell accusations of racial politics ala Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

BN gave us RM10,000, claims 'tuai rumah'

Hello: Now that there is evidence of vote-buying, the Malaysian Election Observers Network (Meonet) should make a police report and also with the Election Commission.

Even if they refuse to take action or give reasons to whitewash the incident, at least this will be made known to the public and world opinion on the state of affairs in this country.

Atan-Toyol: Vote-buying by BN has been going on for decades. The rationale is simple - what's in it for us Iban folks?

You guys become Yang Berhormat and enjoy the good life in the cities. We remain here and have to slog like donkeys, planting our ‘padi bukit', tending to our pepper gardens, etc. Our only entertainment is ‘nyabung ayam' and the occasional ‘tuak' session in the ‘ruai'. So it is fitting that the BN candidates offer some 'incentives'.

These longhouse folks know nothing about democracy. They only know about "dia ni mau kerusi". It is of mutual benefit - both the giver and the receiver. So who wants to make a report, least of all the giver? Otherwise, how to win and continue to misrule, plunder and rob the NCR land?

Peter Clement Goh: If it was Pakatan that had given money, this will be in all the newspapers and the top story of every news channel. Since it is the BN which is giving, it is considered halal .

S'wak: Why Pakatan failed to deny 2/3rd majority

Cala: To my mind, the analysis is flawed due to two factors:

i) See Mariam Mokhtar's column on BN cheating

ii) Gerrymandering by EC

On the second factor, consider the number of votes secured by BN and Pakatan: 372,379 (BN), 277,329 (Pakatan). In percentage, we are talking about 55.36% of votes cast (for BN), 41.23% of votes cast (for Pakatan).

The opposition won 41 votes for every 100 voters who participated in the Sarawak state election. To me, this is a feat for the opposition. In terms of votes, the opposition has exceeded 33.3% of votes cast.

But in terms of seats, the opposition only secured 21.13% of the total available seats of 71. The question is: How would you define success?
